The public perception of large models has evolved, and both capital markets and customers have become less enchanted, shifting focus from the scale and quantity of models to their practical application and commercial value. Companies have realized that owning a large AI model is not the end goal; the key is to integrate these models effectively into products and services to solve real problems and create tangible business value.

Exploring Commercialization Paths

Large model companies are expected to diverge into two main paths for commercialization. First, well-established companies will develop high-quality general-purpose models that can serve as open platforms for other businesses or become “super applications” themselves, driving a dual strategy of technology and product development.

The second path involves transforming from a general large model into an application company. Teams with model capabilities can optimize algorithms, models, and data to create better application products and find their niche in vertical markets.

However, the high computational power required to train large models incurs significant costs. It is estimated that to build a model comparable to ChatGPT, an investment of around 1 billion yuan is the entry ticket. The scarcity and soaring prices of chips further exacerbate the situation, posing a challenge for domestic AI model players.

The Lightness of AI Plugins: A Strategic Move

Despite the high costs, the survival of large model companies will depend on their financial strength, technological innovation, business models, and storytelling abilities. The road to profitability for large model companies remains long. Taking the industry leader OpenAI as an example, in the first half of this year, its annual recurring revenue grew to $3.4 billion.
